Living in Maine is like being a full-fledged fish out of water when it comes to beauty. My skin isn’t used to the dryness, my body isn’t used to the cold (or the dryness), and my hair isn’t used to the static. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been giving my entire body a winter health check-up, and my hair has been my gravest concern. As a native Floridian, I’m used to taming frizz, but I’m completely unfamiliar with taming static– and all the dullness and damage that comes with it. I’ve been doing my research, and paired with the right hair care products, there are some precautionary winter hair hacks you can follow to keep your hair looking and feeling amazing, even during the drabbest months of the year. Keep reading for all five winter hair hacks– and for colorful outfit details at the bottom of this post!

Winter Hair Hacks

1. Combat hat hair with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner.

Hat hair is the worst, and considering you probably won’t take yours off for the next three or four months, it’s incredibly important to find a hair care line that works to boost volume effectively. For my hair, it’s Pantene. Pantene’s Pro-V nutrients penetrate all the way to hair’s core to genuinely and effectively make hair stronger, healthier, more beautiful, and more voluminous. They also have products for all hair types, so every woman can find the boldness and brightness that works for her. My favorite line, especially for the winter months, is the Pantene Pro-V Sheer Volume Collection, which is a customized product line designed specifically for women who want full-bodied, thick hair.

The Volume Collection, which includes Pantene Pro-V Sheer Volume Silicon Free Shampoo, Pantene Pro-V Sheer Volume Weightless Conditioner, and Pantene Pro-V Airspray Strong Hold Hairspray, not only preps hair for an amplified look inspired by collagen, it also provides manageability so you can create the full-bodied styles you love– without extensions. This collection is designed to reinforce hair’s structure for a full, healthy look and features lightweight ingredients that deliver 100 percent full, thick, and weightless body for up to 24 hours. Since switching exclusively to Pantene, I’ve seen an improvement in hair breakage, split ends, and overall hair thickness, which has helped to restore the confidence I once had in my luscious, tropically-acclimated locks.

2. Keep hairspray handy to tame unexpected frizz.

Frizz and static are two very complicated chemical reactions. I won’t get into the details, but to keep moisture in the air from penetrating your hair’s cuticles, gently spritz an alcohol-free, lightweight hairspray, like Pantene Pro-V Airspray Strong Hold Hairspray, all over your hair. I keep a mini bottle in my bag for emergency touch-ups, as well.

Also, if you leave your hairspray at home, try using a dryer sheet! They’ve been known to be static’s worst nightmare. You can rub dryer sheets directly on your hair or rub them on your brushes before brushing or combing your hair.

3. Replace your 30-minute steaming hot shower with a 5-minute tepid one.

Trust me, as a Maine resident of three months, I know how good it feels to bask in the steam of a hot shower. I’m also not suggesting that you never indulge in one again. Just remember that hot water opens the cuticle layer of the hair, causing color loss, so overcompensate with a shorter warm shower and an intensely hydrating shampoo and deep conditioner, like Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Hydrating Shampoo and Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Hydrating Conditioner.

4. Nip split ends in the bud with a deep conditioner.

Cold temps suck moisture out of ends and can make them more prone to breakage. Unfortunately, you can’t actually repair split ends, so use a leave-in conditioner, like Pantene Moisture Renewal 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner, to help control hair’s moisture levels and prevent damage for a soft, smooth, moisturized feel. If your ends already fall in the “super dry” category, use your deep conditioner as often as desired and forego hot styling tools entirely. And if your ends are already splitting, don’t freak out. Get a trim and start with a clean slate.

5. Mitigate damage with heatless hair styling.

When it’s windy and freezing, your hair most likely isn’t happy. Don’t add insult to injury by blow drying (or straightening or curling) your hair twice a day. Try scrunching your hair in a headband (like so) or braiding your hair while it’s wet and letting it air dry over night for beautiful waves without the time, effort, and/or damage of a styling tool.

First of all, I love your outfit. Can never go wrong with some Bean boots! This was a helpful post for me because I too live on the East Coast (New Brunswick, Canada) and am always in need of some hair repair this time of year. Thanks so much!

I’m pretty lucky when it comes to winter here in Southern California since the weather doesn’t get too cold. I do try to avoid putting too much heat on my hair with tools.
